The Medical Transportation Assistance Program (MTAP) provides financial assistance to beneficiaries of the Medical Care Plan (MCP) who incur substantial out-of-pocket travel costs to access specialized insured medical services which are not available in their immediate area of residence. Eligible services for reimbursement include:

  • Airfare
  • Accommodations
  • Meal allowances
  • Taxis (when used in conjunction with airfare)
  • Car rentals
  • Scheduled transportation services
  • Private vehicle usage

Available to anyone in Newfoundland and Labrador that requires specialized medical services including cancer treatment that is not available in their immediate area of residence.

A non-medical escort may also be eligible to travel with you upon the request of your physician. 

Travel not eligible for reimbursement includes:

  • To obtain a second opinion
  • To avoid wait times
  • When treatment is considered experimental
  • To participate in clinical trials
  • When a treatment or suitable alternative is available in the area of residence

Private insurance must be used, if applicable, prior to applying for reimbursement through the MTAP program. All sources of payment for travel must be disclosed.

Complete all relevant forms found here and submit to the Department of Health and Community Services. A social worker at the cancer centre can assist you with completion of these documents.
