Understanding Risk Factors

Many factors can affect a person’s risk of developing breast cancer. These are generally divided into two categories:

  • Non-modifiable risk factors: Factors you cannot change, such as age, genetics, or family history.
  • Modifiable risk factors: Lifestyle-related factors, such as alcohol use, physical activity, and hormone exposure, which may be influenced by personal choices.

Having one or more risk factors doesn’t mean you will develop breast cancer, but it may increase your chances. Being aware of these risks can help guide conversations with your healthcare provider about screening, prevention, and maintaining breast health.
