Questions & Experts: A Medical Oncologist and Oncology Pharmacist Answer Your Questions About Systemic Side Effect Management

Oftentimes, breast cancer patients have questions and concerns about their diagnosis and their health that they are unable to get the answers to. Whether it's because of limited time with their primary healthcare provider or because they don't have access to a specialist, many times, their questions go unanswered. To address this, Canadian Breast Cancer Network has put together a Q&E: Questions and Experts series in hopes that patients are able to ask our hosted experts any questions that they may not otherwise be able to ask.

Dr. Joy McCarthy is a Medical Oncologist and Division Chief of Medical Oncology with the Cancer Care Program of Eastern Health in St. John’s, NL. She is a Clinical Associate Professor within the Discipline of Oncology, Memorial University of Newfoundland. Dr. McCarthy completed her Medical Degree at Memorial University of Newfoundland in 1996 and her certifications in Internal Medicine in 2000 and Medical Oncology in 2001.

Scott Edwards is currently the Clinical Oncology Pharmacy Specialist at the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Center in St. John’s, Newfoundland. He is also an assistant professor at the School of Pharmacy and the Discipline of Oncology, Faculty of Medicine, Memorial University of Newfoundland. He is active in clinical cancer research in the area of chemotherapy toxicities, supportive care and oral chemotherapy adherence. He graduated from Memorial University of Newfoundland with a B.Sc. (Neuroscience) in 1994 and a B.Sc (Pharmacy) in 1997. In 2005, he graduated with a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Washington. He completed a Masters degree in Oncology from Newcastle University in 2015.
